1. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Carrying around any excess weight can worsen the symptoms of sleep apnea because it can constrict your throat and, subsequently, your breathing. In fact, some individuals manage to beat sleep apnea entirely by losing excess weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition to eating a balanced diet, you should also consider getting in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. This can be as simple as taking a brisk walk after dinner. Even without weight loss, regular exercise can help relieve the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.
2. Do Not Sleep on Your Back
When you sleep on your back, your soft palate and tongue naturally rest against your throat, essentially blocking your airway. To mitigate this obstruction, make it a point to sleep on your side or stomach instead. If you wake up on your back because you tend to roll over after you fall asleep, consider sewing a tennis ball into the back of your pajamas to prevent this.
3. Seek Kinesiological Chiropractic Treatment
Regular applied kinesiology treatment can address the underlying cause of your sleep apnea and reduce symptoms significantly. Various treatment approaches including cranial-sacral and soft tissue kinesiology techniques can improve the issues that are contributing to the condition. Additionally, soft tissue massage can promote deeper breathing and better sleep through relaxation.
