Always a question as activity levels rise when the weather improves, “What should be eaten to maintain energy during activity?”
Energy drink vs food. A recent study summarized that energy drinks and fruit were equal in ability to maintain energy. The sugar in the fruit, bananas in this study, fructose, is body friendly and easily absorbed. The energy drinks will have glucose as well as some fructose and usually excessive sodium.
The problem with the fruit is that many will feel full after eating which will work against you while participating.
The fruit is best and there is no rule that you
must finish it all at once. Taking frequent bites spread throughout the event is best. Digestion will be slowed by the muscular activity requirements of blood therefore reducing digestive efficiency. Small amounts often of solid and frequent small quantities of water will keep you ahead of the competition
