What Is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joints are the joints between the skull and the lower jaw. They are located right in front of the ears, and they allow you to move your lower jaw up, down and in a rocking motion so you can chew and talk. The joint is composed of rounded condyles, which glide along the sockets when you open and close your mouth, and a small disc, which acts as a shock absorber. Damage to either or wear and tear over time can result in the symptoms of TMJ, which include recurring headaches.
What Are the Symptoms?
In addition to headaches, the most common symptoms of TMJ include difficulty chewing or biting, a clicking sound when you move your jaw, facial pain, earaches, neck pain, and tender jaws. The most effective way to treat TMJ and eliminate these symptoms will depend on the severity of the condition. Possible treatment approaches include mouth splints for orthopedic correction, bite realignment, anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxants, soft tissue manipulation, acupressure and various dental options.
If you’ve ever had these tension headaches that did not respond to the usual over-the-counter pain relievers or you suffer from other symptoms of TMJ, call our office for an exam during which we will determine if we can help you. Over the years we have worked with multiple physicians and dentists in the field of TMJ dysfunction to apply a unique team approach for this condition. While you are being treated, we will be in contact with and updating those on your team.
Let us help get you off to a positive 2019!
