I am lucky that I can honestly say that I have never not looked forward to getting to the office and seeing patients. Helping and directing through health issues and getting to know you and all that goes into your lives is best part of the day. That said due to the “paper” work and non-patient care issues some days are longer than others.
This email arrived the other day from a patient I saw in the 1980’s and it makes the years and the work all worthwhile. He notes that I could pass on his words---so I pass them on to you. I hope that each of you has the opportunity to get a similar boost at some point soon.
Hi Joe.
This is JB checking in from Albuquerque, NM, after about 6 months here.
I am now 72 and still vertical thanks to you. I wanted you to know that the time we spent
together during my crazed and rather reckless years instilled a kind of awareness in me
that has served me well. I have learned certain lessons of inter-connectivity from you.
The understanding that one anatomical stressor or event or vulnerability springs from
collective sources and may lead to other events. Likewise, one aspect or modality of
physical (and emotional) behavior invariably has its own ramifications—hopefully desirable,
sometimes not. As a human reservoir of wisdom you have been unique—special in the
ways you have not only ministered to an individual’s different systemic needs, but also in
finding caring ways of your own to impart that wisdom. Your true-north instincts
infused some of us with new ways of understanding our strengths and weakness for extended
maintenance. I think you kind of tailor-made your subtle yet firm style of instruction to conform
to the patient’s teachability. In my case, you made me teachable.
This website is a gift…consistently relevant, immediately applicable, and always caring.
For those of us far removed from you in person, this makes a difference. And it is consciousness-
raising of the first order. Thank you for doing it so well and so often. Feel free to use this note
of appreciation any way it may serve you. Or not.
I hope to head back East for a few weeks this winter. I will make a point of tracking you
down in New York.
Best Always, JB
The work we do (patient and I) to get from acute initial episode to life style changes helps maintain health and increase the likelihood of prolonged health.
Add years to life and health to those years!
