Last week I fulfilled a promise to a patient that I would give a talk to her group. The group is based in Westchester County, NY and is a Transplant Support Group. She has been a patient of mine for many years and just recently needed help with neck and back issues. Of course, my treatment extends to health and fitness with many crossroads. She felt this would be a great topic for the group.
There were about 28 people at the meeting with slightly more recipients than support people, mostly spouses. We were set for an hour and 2 hours later the leader needed to cut the time. My main concern was that I expected a group of fragile individuals, and was met with a group of energetic individuals. What could I possibly tell them that they were not already doing? These people wanted info to enhance the second and in some cases third chances they had been given. I am not sure if they learned more than I but I know I enjoyed each and every question.
If this blog is something you enjoy then I thought you would enjoy hearing that this group proves the point of organ donation. Some of them are strong and healthy 15-20 years post-surgery! So do not take it lightly. If you have the ability to donate then consider the act. It is a big step for donor and recipient, however, giving is a great gift.
