#CONCUSSION 101

#CONCUSSION 101

There has been a great deal of media time spent on the increasing frequency of sport associated concussion.  I am not sure if the frequency has increased or awareness has increased.  In either case this is good development.  The point of this note is that concussions happen in many ways not only sports.  You need to be aware of the cause and symptoms so you can recognize this in a friend, child or parent.  Anyone you may observe to have suffered a physical mishap.

Today, the point is THE TRAUMA CAN BE A DIRECT BLOW TO THE HEAD OR BODY OR NO DIRECT TRAUMA AT ALL.  The victim may not fall or come in contact with anything.  Just the amount of force generated in a near miss, slip and not-fall, may jerk the head and neck enough to trigger a concussion. Remember there is a skull around your brain for a reason.  Protection is paramount, and your body will instinctively give up most anything else to avoid direct trauma to the head.

I will continue to expand on this theme to give you more info, make you a better observer and one that can bring awareness the possibility of concussion.
